CHAPTER TEN
Maisie
The snow falling in the soft glow of the streetlight looked like someone had ripped up a box of printer paper and tossed it in front of a high-powered fan. It whipped around in circles before dropping to the ground and I bit my lip as I watched from the window at Agnesâs flat.
I should have gotten Westâs number.
I was bummed that Iâd missed him leave, but I understood that in the flurry of breaking down the festival he needed to take a ride back to his cottage. But now, I couldnât help but worry about him, out there in the cold and not used to these conditions.
The snow clung to the streets, a soft blanket of white, with no tire tracks to mar the pristine landscape.
âYou should go to him.â
âWhat? I wasnâtââ I whirled, looking to where Agnes stood in my bedroom doorway with her cozy house slippers on, holding a cup of tea.
âYou were. You should go. Youâve got a truck.â
I did have a truck. With four-wheel drive. It was a country girlâs truck and had come in useful on more than one occasion.
âI donât know, Agnes. Itâs really coming down out there. What if I get stuck?â I turned back to study the roads. The snow wasnât horribly high, yet. But driving in these conditions would be like driving blind. Surely it wasnât safe.
âYou wonât and if you do, Graham and I will come get you.â
âI donât want to leave you alone.â
âIâm not alone.â Agnes gestured with her cup to The Tipsy Thistle across the street. âGrahamâs right there. And a few stragglers have already gone to the pub. If I need help, I can certainly cross the street and get it. Weston, on the other hand, is all alone in the middle of nowhere in the biggest weather event this town may likely ever see.â
The forecast was calling for almost two feet of snow, which was beyond anything weâd ever experienced before, and forecasters warned of drifts that could get higher than our heads. I nibbled my bottom lip, torn. It would be stupid to go out there, wouldnât it?
âI wouldnât delay much longer, or you will be well and truly out of choices.â
Thinking of West all alone in the cottage, maybe not knowing how to use his fireplace, spurred me into action. Grabbing an extra jumper, I pulled it over my head, along with my heavy coat, gloves, hat, and waterproof hiking boots. Spying my phone and charger, I grabbed both and put them in a bag, as well as my laptop.
âHere, take these just in case.â Agnes handed me a box of candles, matches, and a flashlight. In her other hand, she offered a market bag. âRations, if needed. Oh, and I added a power bank to charge phones too.â
âYou wonât need it?â I stopped and Agnes shook her head.
âI sell them at the store. I have a few charging now, so even if the power goes out, Iâll be able to fully charge anything I need for days.
